As you might imagine, my computer equipment gets a lot of use and is essential to what I do in helping to run this site.
When my old router broke down I decided to go for something ultrafast and found the Dlink DIR-655 > Xtreme N Gigabit Router.

Not only does this router seem to have one of the highest performance ratings for multi-usernetworks but it also is a gigabit router which means that any computers which are linked to it ny Ethernet cable can send files to each other incredibly fast.

There aren't many gigabit routers around and no modem routers as far as I can tell so I was obliged to buy a router and separate modem.

The other feature of this router is that it it operates at the new N standard wireless speeds and ranges. This means that theoretically you can connect wirelessly at up to 300mps instead of the previous G standard of up to 54mps - a substantial jump in speed. The range if the signal is also signicantly enhanced although I haven't done any range tests.

I was very worried that setting up modem and router separately would be problematic but in fact it was a dream. Once the modem was configured and working, I simply connected the modem to the router and when it powered up it just started working. Perfect!
It took me a further 5 minutes or so to set the security parameters (I have a Yahoo office very close by and I don't want any playful technicians testing their hacking skills on my network!)

This router cost about £85 - very good value for a high spec router. I was only surprised that the wireless adapters to receive the N signal are not available in this country so I had to rely on Netgear instead.

I called Dlink technical support. Very friendly - but didin't have a clue as to why or when they might be available - and frankly I had the impression that they weren't too bothered.

Well, it can't all be perfect.

I cam across a review for a Brother mcf-240c...copier, fax, printer and found one quite cheap in argos (old catalogue), i decided to take the plunge and wow. what a workhorse, never seems to run out of ink, the carts are big, the speed is excellent, very fast and the draft mode isnt too wishy washy, the price of inks is good, originals are only £9 each or compatables work out £10 a set, the photo quality is exellent.
i always shied away from Brother, but this is great.
the item fax's also and allows for an answer machine to kick in also, fast photo copying, also as a scanner its great.
I went back to the trader from whom I had bought the laptop who investigated and advised me the ONLY way I could get this repaired is for me to return it to ACER for THEM to fit a new motherboard at a cost to me of £320. I find it scandalous that a £550 computer is totally US after just 13 months and I have to pay to get it repaired almost 65% of what it cost to purchase.
Motherboards for this computer are NOT available other than from acer and cannot be bought seperately. the computer has to be returned to acer for repair.
I will NEVER ever buy another acer computer laptop or other because of this policy and warn everyone else of this. There are a number of acer 5100 laptops for sale on eBay as spares or repair that seem to have this same problem.
If it is within warrenty, send it back, if it is out of warrenty, contact the company you bought it from and request and out of warrenty form...

I bought mine from Tesco a year and a half ago... its been back to acer 4 times for repairs (more than one problem at a time too!) on the 5th occassion due to being out of warranty they would not do anything... I complained to Tesco, who blamed it on Acer and visa versa... In the end my partners dad found the email address for the CEO of Tesco and he emailed him telling him all the hassle we had. I got an Out of Warranty form to fill out and a couple of weeks later received a cheque for £250 in the post - The depreciated value of the laptop according to tesco. They havent requested the laptop back either and although there are many problems with it its still usable.
mother board appears to be bent as funny colours cover the screen but if you bend the laptop a little the screen returns to normal
Screen wont click shut into the laptop itsself (seems to be out of allignment but has been since they fitted a new screen)
Thanks for the info. I bought the acer from a local small one man shop. What is wrong with it is the IDE controller on the motherboard is kaput thus nothing works. It went wrong at 13.5 months so out of warranty acording to acer, who refuse to have anything to do with it. except if I pay for a new motherboard. So I appear to be stuffed.

I agree. Overclockers seem a good company (I've purchased from them in the past), and their forum is a great place if you're uncertain about what you need.
I agree - Overclockers are a good company to do buisiness with and you can gleen some usefull info from the reviews of products posted (but as said before - a bit of a 'fanboy' format).

My personal recomendation of the best companies to buy PC kit from (in order of preference) are:

Scan Computers UK: Computer Hardware - All (first class service)
I've been building PC's for some 6 years now and found the three above companies have proved reliable and been able to supply exactly what I need at a price thats competitive.

Okay, I drive my PC pretty hard, I'm often to be found burning DVDs, printing, web authoring... often at the same time.

I decided to upgrade my desktop machine recently and remembered that a friend had bought a machine through PALICOMP on eBay. I confirmed that his experience was good and chanced my arm.

You can either buy the base PC through one of their frequent auctions on eBay, or go straight to their website, the prices are comparable and the performance pretty darn awesome.

Let's put it this way, for about £500 I bought a 9.6GHz Quad Core PC with 6GB of RAM, 500GB or Hard Drive and 1GB of Graphics memory. Oh, and twin 18x DVD Burners and Windows Vista installed.

Comparable Spec machines in your local business park are probably not available yet, and if they are, are probably £300 more than Palicomp are asking.

Once you've placed your order (or won your auction) you're offered a number of 'extras' which can bump up the price, so be careful, but the 'Queue Jump' option is worth doing, I ordered my PC on Sunday, Paid on Monday and it arrived on Wednesday!
I tested the performance on PC Pitstop, always worth looking at, and it came out in the fastesr 5% they'd ever tested!

In general very impressed with the PS3 - jut bought GTA4 and loving it (imagining various street hoods are the DCA's!)

GT5 Prologue also a very classy title

My only downside is the state of the Playstation network - downloads from that and the shop, as well as online gaming are sometimes so appaling

I would have preferred to pay like XBox and get a decent quality network

1 example is the last big firmware update I did was around 5 times faster by downloading via the PC to a USB stick, when compared to just doing the auto update from the machine - thats not acceptable

My only gripe is the inability to upgrade the adobe flash player built into the internet browser, oh and the terrifingly slow download time for system upgrades. I gave up in the end and downloaded to a memory stick via my lappy.

I purchased a ANTEC NEOPOWER 480 power supply in September 2004 for a PC I was building. I was around the £100+ price at that time. Since building the computer I have had nothing but trouble with it. It is not the first computer I have built but it is the first that I have had major problems with. I have had to replace most of the major components and some of them twice. When things started to go wrong I visited some of the online forums to see if I could get some help and several people said it could be a power issue and to check the voltages in the bios etc. I disregarded the comments at the time thinking that I had paid a lot of money for the power supply and I had read ( and believed ) all the claims of quality and performance of ANTEC’S unit.

First I had to replace the Asus graphics card after 9 months ( luckily under warranty), next the motherboard went – that was just outside the warranty period ( 1 year ) but after quite a struggle with the supplier I managed to get my money back and purchased a new board. Another 5 months passed and the replacement graphics card failed also- that I had to replace out of my own pocket.

Last week I turned on the PC and BANG! a flash of light jumped from the back of the computer and it was dead. I contacted ANTEC via their website and they said could I tell them what was the date of purchased - I replied saying September 2004. Later that day I got a reply to say that the warranty had expired. Yes it had by 3 months only conveniently for them.

I feel I have been ripped off by purchasing this poor quality and faulty unit. This unit should have lasted much longer that 3 years. Not happy and I won’t be purchasing anything else from ANTEC.

it's always important to add up the wattage/power required of all the individual devices in a PC to make sure you get an adequate PSU with enough oomph ( technical term ) to run your system, with a bit of power headroom if possible.

Many recent Graphics cards take a considerable amount of power, so it is very important to make sure you get the correct wattage PSU for your rig. ( and think ahead also as you may later wish to upgrade some internals ( additional hard drives, newer graphics card etc )

I find Enermax and Corsair particularly well made and solid power supplies.

The power supply probably isn't the initial problem, even a low wattage power supply can feed the most demanding of computers, a lot of companies quote megga high power power supplies but most of the time it is over the top and not required.

I suggest your problem was the build process, did you use an anti static mat, if you did then it is products failure if not then it was just a problem waiting to happen.
If you used a strap, sorry when building a computer a strap is not good enough you need a mat, putting a component on top of the anti static bag it came out of is also guarantee the component will fail, the component inside the bag is safe because the bag keeps the static build-up on the outside of the bag.

Static does not always destroy it it can degrade, it can break a pn junction and the junction grow back, it will however be degraded and more prone to failure.

I forget the component failure rate due to static Compaq quoted when I was a server engineer but it has a substantial amount.

The PSU failing you mentioned at the end is likely to be component falure just buy a new PSU, PSU's are not static sensitive unless you open them and trust me you do not want to open them, if it lasted 3 years thats not too bad they do a lot of work.

Well i replaced the Antec unit with a OCZ psu and as yet have had no problems with either it or any of the other components.

BTW yesterday my other computer ( again with a damn ANTEC psu ) failed - .

I have just replaced it with a ACe 480W unit (£16) 0n amazon and it already shows better voltage values via asus probe. Although the ace is not as visually impressive as the ANTEC I’m guessing it will be more reliable

I didn't even know they had all these complaints, might of put me off buying from them if I had. But as I have had no problems with anything, apart from a faulty SODIMM which the guy replaced on the spot, I will continue to use until such time they sell me some crap.

To be honest i think eclipse customer services are amazing.
They had quick speedy replies and treated me with the utmost respect.

Here are a few emails i have had from them after querying about my order.
The bold sentences are the beginning of a new email.

Heres the story.
I emailed them straight after my order because after doing some research on the internet i was quite worried because of all this 'bad feedback and bad customer service' that i had been hearing about.
So i wanted to check on the delivery date and check out their customer services...

Well as you can see they are Extremely polite, yes they had to delay the order but this is the same as every single internet site selling this laptop. (the suppliers were only restocking to all the internet dealers at the same date)
Personally i would reccomend them.

Good Evening,

They have subsequently advised that there is a alternative notebook, of which is the ASUS G70S-7S019C 17 T9500 4G 640G VHP Notebook. This is slightly more in price, at £1299.95 excl. vat, however does have a better specification in many respects, apart from that it does not come included with a Blu-Ray optical drive.
yes James was polite with me too ( and I was polite back) - polite but v helpful and inconsistent several times changing his story as to whether i was entitled to have my faulty PC picked up ( as I felt I was under the premier30 scheme since I reported it faulty and requested it be fixed within 30 days - by the time Eclipse had delayed me with eg suggestions I contact the monitor maker direct 30 days had elapsed).

I think the proof of the pudding will come when you do have a PC problem and you are landed with ££ of non working gear that Eclipse are reluctant to fix - I guess replacing a faulty SODIMM on the spot wasn't sufficent inconvenience that they tried to wriggle out of it - a faulty PC might be a different matter,
how often their PCs fail is hard to say compared to other makers - often enough though and the drawback is their refusal to help when this does happen.

Paying by credit card, I purchased a Targa High End PC from Lidl for £699 in May 2006. It was supplied with a three year warranty. It soon developed various faults and I lost count of the number of times Targa sent an engineer to repair it. In October 2008 it failed to boot up and Targa indicated that it was beyond repair and gave me a choice. They would either a) take the PC away to Germany to repair which would take several weeks or b) take the PC away and refund 50% of the original purchase price. The person who made the 50% offer said that to make such an offer was "big good will" as I would "easily be able to purchase an equivalent PC for such a sum".
I bought an Acer Aspire (so far so good) for £369.99 and advised Targa, on October 14th of my decision to accept the 50% refund. I was advised by Tiina Mäkipää of Targa that a letter will be sent to me which I am to take to Lidl with the PC (for which packaging would also be sent) and I would be provided with a refund. Tiina Mäkipää said it usually takes about a week to 10 days before such a letter would arrive.
Two weeks later I emailed Targa as the letter had not arrived and Targa's response was to advise me, by email, of the telephone number to contact Lidl.
I telephoned Lidl on 30 October and the following day, 31 October, whereupon the Lidl rep told me to “give them a couple of days”. A week later on 7 November I telephoned Lidl again and spoke to Janine who advised me that she will put a note on my account to indicate that I phoned to request information on any progress in respect of my refund and that someone from Lidl will contact me either by post or phone.
Another week passed without any response from Lidl so, on 14 November I emailed Targa. Targa responded that they will forward my inquiry onto Lidl.
On 17 November Lidl phoned to advise me that a letter will be sent to me instructing me to return the PC to Lidl in exchange for a refund and that I will receive the letter by Friday 21 November. The refund amount is £315. I said that was not the sum agreed with Targa (surprise surprise it is less) and I was told “it was less due to depreciation”. Depreciation? What? Is that because the absolutely useless PC (which has not worked since £350 was agreed to) has depreciated further since the agreement due to Targa or Lidl dragging their feet?
It is Friday 21 November today and the letter has not arrived. As I have yet to receive the refund I have to wonder will the PC depreciate any further?
A week later - Friday 28 November - and Lidl and Targa have advised me that the refund of £350 will be paid to me in full. I will update here with news of whatever - whenever it happens.
Today, 2nd December 2008, Lidl made a full refund of the £350 without any liability to return the PC or even produce a purchase receipt.
On December 20 I contacted the manager who had issued the refund by text "Thanks for sorting the refund. I expect it I am OK to dispose of the PC as I see fit".
She replied that I should return it to a store or that she would call to collect it - she also apologised and added that she did not know that I still had the PC in my possession. I responded that I would return the PC to a store but was concerned about some confidential financial data and artwork stored on the hard drive and that, if I had not contacted her, I could have probably kept it. She did not reply to that.
I thought "I will not hurry to return the PC" and on December 26 was able to discuss the matter with another person who is employed by Lidl and he advised me that, once I had received the letter from Lidl's Head Office and the refund the matter was closed and that no one from Lidl is allowed to request return of the PC.

Thanks CS glad you enjoyed. I am tempted to pass the tower onto someone to play with - after a reasonable duration. I know it could be a bit dodgy but would they have the cheek to ask for the tower after month or two? On the other hand I could mention it to the manager who paid the refund - just sort of confirm (I am OK to dispose of the tower as I see fit (?)) as she was quite helpful and understanding. If I make any formal demands they might just confiscate it.

Hi,
Read your post and wasn't surprised at the problems you've encountered or how you were treat by Targa.

I bought a Targa laptop in Feb 07 and have had numerous problems with the laptop as well as paying out over £100 for useless repairs that have made no difference to the performance of the laptop. We've sent it off 2-3 times to Targa who have basically just rebooted it like I had done in the first place, and replaced the motherboard unneccesarily and I have had to reboot the laptop about 30 times in the time we've owned it.

It has gone again and refuses to reboot and restarts itself before being able to run the boot disc. I think this is the final straw with the laptop and don't know what to do. I was wondering if you had any advice on what course of action to take because all they suggest is to keep resending it back to Germany who seem to do the same thing or nothing at all to solve the laptop's problems. It has become a waste of money and hope you can give me some sort of advice as to what to do.

hope you reply soon.

Hello Scorpio
I am very sorry to hear of the problems with your Targa Laptop. The Targa PC which I purchased was provided with a three year warranty and all repairs were covered by the warranty. As you have paid £100 and purchased in Feb 07 I expect your warranty was for one year.
But even if your warranty has expired you could try contact Consumer Direct for advice (if you live in UK - if not the UK the equivalent in your country). But if you have a three year warranty you must continue to apply pressure to Targa - no let up on that.
Have you kept a record of every time the laptop was repaired including what was wrong and what action was taken etc..? You could prepare a blow by blow account of everything that has happened and stick it on your Facebook page and tell Targa that, if they need a reminder of any of the repair attempts they can always check out your Facebook page.
It took me 2 and a half years to get my result - many emails and many repair attempts.
If you bought the laptop with a credit card then the credit card issuer may well be liable - you must contact your trading standards (or consumer direct or whoever) to discuss that. I did not go via that route though - I kept the pressure on Targa - and Lidl paid the refund.
I don't know if any of this will help but I wish you every success in your endeavour to reach a suitable conclusion. If I think of anything else I will reply again.

Do not purchase a PC from PC Specialist if you expect them to provide anything other than very poor support or even to fulfil your order for you.

AVOID! AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

You should read the small print on their website as you don't really know what components will go into your PC. They only guarantee to provide components within a range so you don't know what you will get. Clearly they only use what they are getting the best deal on at any given time. I placed an order with them in May and they were very helpful - until they had my money!

PROBLEM 1
I ordered a specific type of processor. After a few days they contacted me to tell me that it was out of stock and that I could wait for it to arrive (they had no delivery date). As an alternative they offered me a "higher spec" processor for an additional £20 or a lower spec one with no price adjustment. Thank you very much I thought!

Not having much choice I opted to give them another £20.

PROBLEM 2
I had ordered a TV card that was advertised as dual tuner with analogue aerial input. There was even a picture of it showing where to plug in the analogue aerial. When the PC arrived I saw that they had supplied a different card from the one that was pictured that did not offer any analogue option. I cannot receive digital TV so the card was no use to me. I contacted them to ask them why and I was treated as though I was some sort of halfwit.

I pointed out that their description of the card said "Watch DVB-T and analog TV Worldwide on PC". They responded tersely and unsympathetically at first then over a period of a month they ignored most of my emails.

After kicking up a fuss I got a reply from a manager who told me that if I returned the original card I could have a refund. I am now faced with removing the card from the PC. Taking the time to package it and send it back to them then trying to find a suitable card and fitting this myself. The reason I went to them in the first place was that I was very busy and I thought they were going to build the PC I specified. I don't want the hassle of looking for components and fitting them myself.

PROBLEM 3
The PC was a replacement for one that I had purchased from ALDI just over three years ago. On paper the new one appeared to have a much higher spec but their is no apparent performance improvement. In fact I am now getting warning messages telling me to close applications down as I am running out of memory, etc.

I would never recommend PC Specialist to anyone after this experience. Please avoid.

It was returned back to me two weeks later and to my dismay the report said that no fault was found... this was despite hours of technical diagnostics and reformatting the hard drive...
He said he would call us and arrange collection of the PC, this was the last we heard from PC Specialist until after we had written two recorded delivery letters, stating the Sale of Goods Act 1979, that all items supplied should be free from minor defect, not of satisfactory quality or fit for purpose. We reported them to Consumer Direct, and Trading Standards (who now have a file on this company) and we even started legal proceedings to recover the money they owed us through the court.
Having had extremely poor after-sales support in the past I approached these guys as a potential supplier of future machines. I found the advice willingly offered was extremely helpful & eventually confirmed my specifications for a high performance machine. This was delivered slightly ahead of the projected date - well packed and in excellent condition. On each of the two or three occasions I needed advice when setting up the new machine this was immediately available and knowledgeable staff patiently listened to (and sorted out), my queries.
It seems these days that people are too quick to post negative comments about companies - as a business owner myself I know how quick people are to complain when things don't go to plan, but often it's the silent majority that make up the true picture of a company!

2. Pricing - yes there were one or two cheaper companies out there, but I've heard so much good stuff about these guys that for a few pounds (and we're only talking around £12) they were definitely worth it! I opened up the case and everything inside was high quality and well assembled.

3. Customer service - I wanted to change my hard drive from 500gb to 750gb, and the process was a dream - took literally 2 minutes. Also the the technical support calls were answered quickly, but I've only had to call them twice so not a lot to comment there...

I would not use PCSpecialist or advise anyone to. I ordered an expensive workstation and paid extra for fast build and delivery. That all came through OK but Vista loaded on the machine was not the version that I had ordered and worst did not match that provided on the CD so I could not activate it. Phoned their help desk said they would send me a new activation code. never got it. E-mailed their help desk - never replied. Free month ran out and the machine stopped working. Phoned their help desk - got partial help but they never phoned me back to reload the new version. Lost everything on the computer and had to start from scratch - lost days of work. At that point made a complaint by e-mail - which they brushed off. RUBBISH CUSTOMER SERVICE.

I bought a new gaming rig from these guys just before Christmas - what a treat! It came with FarCry2 and I've been playing it on its highest settings without any problems what so ever! Delivery was superfast and their sales team were really helpful when I needed some pre-sales advice. All in all 10/10 and I've already told my brother, who has been looking to get a new laptop from here too!

Bought a new desktop from this company 2 months ago and it's been the best PC I've ever bought. I'm a sole trader working on video compression and editing, and converting VHS to digital and this PC is the most stable and fastest PC I've ever owned!

Right from the moment of ordering I was filled with confidence with this company, they updated my regurarlly with regards to the status of my order, and although I had to wait a few minutes to get through on the phone, the support was spotless.

Would I use again? YES, and I'm considering getting a new laptop from here too for my son once he starts university later this year!
